Tema Therapy Center - Bridging Cultures for Mental Health and Healing

Tema Therapy Center

At Tema Therapy Center, we understand the challenges of navigating life in a multicultural world. Our mission is to provide culturally sensitive mental health services that honor your language, culture, and unique background. Founded by Dr. Irina Volynsky, our team is dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome misdiagnoses and find the right path to healing. Whether you’re adjusting to a new culture or seeking support for your children, Tema Therapy Center is here to guide you with empathy, expertise, and understanding.

In an uncertain and often lonely world, Tema Therapy Center is here to help. We are a multicultural and multilingual mental health center that believes in the power of culture, language, and family roots to guide your journey toward healing and growth.

Our Story

Tema Therapy Center was founded by Dr. Irina Volynsky, who has years of experience evaluating children and adults from diverse cultural backgrounds. Dr. Volynsky recognized that many individuals whose native language was not English were often misdiagnosed and not receiving the appropriate help they needed. The barrier wasn’t just language—it was also the cultural context in which norms and pathology were understood differently.

For example, a child who emigrated from a rural, non-Western country might struggle to read at age eight. However, this doesn’t necessarily indicate a learning disability. In their native culture, eight might be the age when children are just beginning to learn the basics of reading. These cultural expectations can lead to misunderstandings and misdiagnoses in a Western context, such as the U.S., where literacy education often begins much earlier.

At Tema Therapy Center, we understand these cultural discrepancies and their impact on mental health. Our mission is to provide quality mental health services that are informed by your native language, culture, and background.

Our Approach

We are a team of professionals who have lived and worked at the crossroads of different cultures and languages. Our therapists are extensively trained in cultural sensitivity and have firsthand experience engaging with diverse cultures—not just as professionals, but as individuals and parents.

While we often communicate with children in English (as it is typically their preferred language), our services are deeply rooted in an understanding of your family’s cultural and linguistic background. We believe that effective mental health care must consider the whole person, including their cultural identity.

Why Choose Tema Therapy Center?

  • Culturally Informed Care: We recognize the importance of cultural context in mental health and tailor our services to meet your unique needs.

  • Experienced Professionals: Our team has extensive training and experience in multicultural and multilingual therapy.

  • Compassionate Support: We provide a safe, understanding space where you and your family can feel heard and valued.
